What is an
apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a paid job that combines practical experience with training to achieve a nationally recognised qualification.
It’s a fantastic scheme to take important steps into a career, giving you the opportunity to gain practical skills and academic knowledge all whilst earning a competitive salary.
From civil engineering to human resources, quantity surveying to business administration, health and environmental to highways maintenance, we have a wide range of exciting apprenticeship opportunities available.

What apprenticeships are offered at Kier?
Level 2 - 3 apprenticeships
As an apprentice at Kier, you'll join the busy, exciting world of construction, learning as you earn. We want our apprentices to feel valued and a part of the team which is why all apprentices will join Kier on a permanent contract rather than the traditional temporary contracts you may find at most other employers.

Business support apprentice
This qualification could lead you into a wide range of career opportunities and is a great opportunity for you to gain a wider understanding of the working world.
You’ll be providing high quality administrative services to the wider team, taking ownership of various projects and programmes. You might get involved in planning and organising travel, maintaining records and storing them correctly in accordance to Uk, industry and Kier standards.
Qualification: Level 3

Apprentice civil engineer
This course is a fantastic step into a career in engineering. You’ll play an important role in the designing, planning and managing of construction projects. You’ll be shown how to resolve design and development problems that occur along the way and ensure the project is delivered to a high standard.
Qualification: Level 3

Highways maintenance apprentice
Working as part of a highways maintenance team, you’ll work together to carry out highways maintenance duties as well as winter maintenance, and emergency response when required.
Qualification: Level 2

Customer service apprentice
Working closely with the customer experience team to continually focus on improving our customer experience. You’ll learn all about taking a customer centric approach and delivering Kier’s customer excellence strategy.
Qualification: Level 3

Building services apprentice
Assist in the design and development of mechanical building services systems including heating, ventilation, air conditioning, plumbing and fire protection systems.
Qualifications: Level 3

Mechanical Fitter
Assisting with the installation of mechanical systems, you'll be performing tests and inspections to ensure systems are operating efficiently and safely.
You'll also support with assembling mechanical systems and ensuring all components fit together correctly.
Qualification: Level 3

Apprentice planner
As an apprentice planner, you’ll be shown how to create plans for construction projects and continually supporting how a project develops from initial plan to final delivery.
You’ll play a key role in assisting and maintaining the project’s contractual terms and conditions including how they are presented.
Qualification: Level 3

Apprentice estimator
As an apprentice estimator, you’ll work within the commercial team of a project. This means you’ll be working on site between multiple projects, working with your colleagues to process the information you receive during the process of bidding for a project.
You’ll attend progress meetings with key stakeholders and clients, site visits and settlement meetings as part of the bidding process. You’ll help measure and assess the work required to complete a project and present as part of the bidding sum.

How does it work?
Whilst on an apprenticeship course, you’ll be required to spend 20% of your working hours towards your qualification. This can include studying at college, or online sessions with your training provider.
The other 80% is spent gaining practical experience in the job role you are undertaking at Kier.

Who can apply?
We are committed to providing opportunities for all and an apprenticeship at Kier is a fantastic way to learn new skills and pursue a new career whether you’re a school leaver or someone with a wealth of experience looking for a new challenge.
Each role may have its own specific requirements which will always be listed in the job advert, but generally apprenticeships are for everyone provided you are:
- aged 16 and over
- living and eligible to work in the UK
- not in full-time education
Before you complete your apprenticeship, you will need a level 2 in maths and english which your training provider will support you with once you start your training if you do not already have these.
Level 4 - 6 Apprenticeships
Want to know something cool? You could earn a degree without incurring a single penny of student debt through a degree apprenticeship at Kier.
How does it work?
Your course can take 4 - 5 years to complete, and at the end you’ll have a recognised BSc qualification from one of our university partners.
During that time, you’ll be permanently employed by Kier, gain valuable work experience and have all your tuition and accommodation fees covered by us. There may be pre-determined block weeks throughout the course for you to go to university, attend lectures and meet other people on your course.
What degree apprenticeships are offered at Kier?
At Kier, we offer a wide range of degree apprenticeship roles to kickstart your career in construction. Degree apprenticeships are the perfect mixture of earning and learning, with dedicated block weeks releasing you from the day job to stay local to your university and attend in person seminars and lectures and getting to know your fellow coursemates.

This degree prepares you for a number of roles including construction management, planning, business information modelling (BIM), estimating and health and safety.
You’ll be part of the site team, liaising with other site professionals to ensure the project runs smoothly, safely, according to plans and on time.
Entry requirements
You will be enrolled at Sheffield Hallam University and you will need two A-Levels (A-C) or Level 3 qualification or a T-Level (merit).For mature students, at least 5 years’ experience in a related career is required.

Quantity surveying
As a quantity surveyor, you’ll play a key role in a construction project, managing the costs from the early design plans, all the way through to project completion.
Your priorities will be to make sure that the projects meet legal and quality standards and that clients get good value for money.
Entry requirements
You will be enrolled at Sheffield Hallam University and you will need two A-Levels (A-C) or Level 3 qualification or a T-Level (merit).For mature students, at least 5 years’ experience in a related career is required.

In your role as a civil engineer, you’ll be the key technical person involved in the designing, planning and managing of construction projects.
You’ll be able to resolve design and development problems that occur along the way and ensure a high quality project is delivered.
Entry requirements
You will be enrolled at Coventry University and you will need 96 UCAS points from 3 A-Levels including maths or physics. Relevant Level 3 or T-level (merit) qualifications with a high maths content will be accepted too.AND 4 GCSEs including science and English (C/4) and maths (B/5).
For mature students, at least 5 years’ experience in a related career is required.

As a trainee building services engineer, you’ll be assisting in the design and development of mechanical building services systems including heating, ventilation, air conditioning, plumbing and fire protection systems.

Electro-mechanical engineering
Working as a trainee electro-mechanical engineer at Kier, you’ll be producing detailed engineering designs and developments, designing electrical engineering works in accordance with current standards using bespoke software.

Environmental
Working within the environmental team of a given project or business division, you will play a crucial role in supporting our sustainability when delivering vital infrastructure to the UK.
You’ll carry out environmental inspections on site, help maintain the inspection programme and providing environmental inspections on site, help maintain the inspection programme and providing environmental awareness training to the wider teams and collecting environmental and sustainability data to report to the business division and Kier Group.

Digital construction
Within the digital construction teams, you will play a key role in supporting the design and information management process across projects, ensuring compliance with industry and Kier standards and meeting client requirements.

Design management
Working within the design team of a project at Kier, you’ll learn how to coordinate and manage the design aspects of construction projects from start to finish. You’ll ensure drawings and designs are produced on time and easy to understand and use the technical expertise you’ll pick up along the way to oversee the design process.

Who can apply?
Each role will have its own requirements, so make sure you pay close attention to the job advert when submitting your application, but the basic requirements for all are:
- be 18 years old or older
- have at least 4 GCSEs graded C/4 or above (including maths and English)
- have at least 2 A-levels or an equivalent Level 3 diploma, preferably in a subject related to your chosen course
- if you are a mature applicant, relevant work experience can be used in place of the grade requirements so make sure to speak to your recruiter about this after your apply
