“Joining the WiTnE programme was a real eye-opener for me. I never saw myself working in this industry before, but now I find myself wondering why I hadn’t considered it earlier”.

Vivian Orogun joined Tarmac Kier Joint Venture (TKJV) in June 2024 after taking part in Transport for London’s (TfL) Women into Transport and Engineering (WiTnE) programme in October 2023, which encourages women to consider careers in the transport and construction industries through training and work experience.

Since joining through this programme, Vivian has had the chance to work alongside a wide range of colleagues who have helped her better understand the industry and discover different career opportunities within it. We caught up with Vivian to talk about her role, career plans, and advice for others thinking a career in this industry.

Why are programmes like the WiTnE important?

“Programmes like the WiTnE programme are very important because they give women the opportunity to pivot into a variety of roles within this industry; an industry that many women may not initially consider when thinking about a career change.”

“Joining the WiTnE programme was a real eye-opener for me. I never saw myself working in this industry before, but now I find myself wondering why I hadn’t considered it earlier.”

Has your career progressed since joining TKJV?

“I’ve had the chance to work alongside a wide range of people who have been instrumental in helping me better understand the industry and identify where I might fit in the future.”

What do you enjoy most about your role?

“I enjoy this role because no two days are the same. It gives me the opportunity to interact with a wide range of stakeholders, which helps broaden my understanding of the contract as a whole and highlights potential pathways for me to pivot my career within TKJV.”

Tell us about your role, what does your day-to-day look like?

“I am part of the reactive response team within our highways maintenance contract. My team and I respond to incidents as they arise, from potholes to road traffic collisions and broken-down vehicles. We coordinate sending repair teams to attend sites, make defects safe, or carry out first-time permanent repairs where possible".

“We also liaise closely with a range of stakeholders across the contract including our client TfL.”

What are your future goals?

“My future goal is to move into either project management or a quantity surveying role within TKJV. I’ve taken the initiative to speak with various project managers across the contract, as well as the commercial team to better understand where opportunities lie and how I can transition into one of these roles.”
