Diversity and inclusion
Innovation comes from diversity, both of which underpin all that we do at Kier. We want to be a workplace where everyone is encouraged to bring their wholeselves to work and can use their experiences to create positive change within the construction industry.
As part of our commitment to building a more diverse workplace, we developed a six year roadmap to show how we will deliver to create real change. Here are some of the actions we’ve taken so far:
Our D&I journey
May 25 - Disability Confident Leaders
We achieved Disability Confident Leaders status, building from our Disability Confident Employers status achieved in 2021.
Apr 25 - Neonatal leave
We introduced our first neonatal leave policy, giving enhanced support to parents who have a baby in the neonatal unit.
Mar 25 - Inclusive Kier brand standards
Aligned to the European Accessibility Act, we've made our brand standards more inclusive.
Feb 25 - FTSE Women 250 Leaders Review
We were announced as the number 1 company in the construction and materials sector.
Jan 25 - Relaunch Expect Respect materials
We've relaunched our Expect Respect materials with refreshed branding to increase visibility and generate positive conversations about our five Expect Respect basics.
Nov 24 - Call it Out improvements
We brought in improvements to simplify our Call it Out process to ensure all our colleagues have clarity and confidence in raising issues anonymous issues related to diversity and inclusion and whistleblowing.
Jul 24 - Making Ground wins D&I initiative of the year
Our Making Ground programme won the Diversity and Inclusion Initiative of the Year at the Water Industry Awards.
Sep 23 - female fit PPE
We launched a PPE survey in September which showed us we needed to do more to make PPE fit better and more comfortably for women on site. We've since launched more inclusive ranges of PPE and ensured they are more readily available.
Prison employment programme
Making Ground is our prison engagement and employment programme, designed to support serving prisoners and prison leavers into sustainable employment in the construction industry.
Supporting our Armed Forces
Working alongside our clients and supply chain partners, we have a long-standing history of providing job and training opportunities to people from the Armed Forces community.
Our commitment as one of the first construction companies to sign the Armed Forces Covenant in 2013 (which we re-signed in 2021), we have a long-standing history of providing job and training opportunities for the Armed Forces community. We remain committed to offering meaningful and sustainable employment, working with providers including the Career Transition Partnership (CTP) and Buildforce.
