How we use artificial intelligence (AI)
in the recruitment process

We're committed to being open and transparent with our recruitment process, and that includes giving you guidance on the use of AI.

What we mean by AI

At Kier, we define AI technology as tools that enable tasks to be performed that would typically require human intelligence, like analysing information and supporting human decision-making.

These tools are designed to assist and enhance human capability, rather than act independently, and are used in a controlled, ethical and transparent way, in line with our policies and values.

Our approach to AI at Kier

We understand that AI technology is evolving rapidly, and we accept our responsibility to use it safely, securely and ethically.

The AI tools we use are designed to support human decision-making; internally, we call it 'the human at the helm'.

There is always a human leading the use of AI, and all hiring decisions are made by people. Every application is reviewed by a member of our team.

We use technology to support our recruitment processes and improve the experience for you and our hiring teams. This allows us to spend more time getting to know our candidates, preparing you for interviews and sharing meaningful, constructive feedback.

We're open about how we use technology in recruitment and keep our practices under review as tools and regulations evolve.

AI is used to assist with tasks like:

  • role briefings, making sure we have all the right requirements
  • advert writing, helping keep content clear, inclusive and focused on the role's key skills
  • automated communication and scheduling, between you, our recruiters and hiring managers (e.g. finding interview slots that work for everyone)
  • reviewing information more consistently (e.g. tidying up interview notes to provide you with clear, structured feedback)
  • recording interviews (with your permission) to support with capturing notes, allowing interviewers to focus on the conversation

Currently, AI does not support us with:

  • reviewing applications or CVs, every single application is looked at by a member of the team and no applications are auto-rejected
  • conducting interviews, you'll always be interviewed by a (real!) Kier employee, not an AI agent
  • decision-making, all recruitment decisions are made by one of the team

When it's ok for you to use AI in your job application

We're embracing AI at Kier, bringing in a range of tools through our Naturally Digital ambitions, and continually looking at opportunities to become more digitally enabled in the way we work.

When it comes to recruitment, we're most interested in you and what you have to offer. This is something that AI cannot replicate! Our recruitment process is designed to understand your skills, experience and potential. We encourage you to use AI ethically and thoughtfully, as a tool to support you, not to replace your own voice and thinking capabilities.

How AI could support your application

  • helping you format or structure your CV
  • researching about Kier and the construction industry before applying for a job or whilst preparing for an interview
  • practising with mock interview questions and improving your interview technique
  • structuring your own examples and experiences
  • checking spelling and grammar

When to avoid using AI

  • copying and pasting responses generated by AI into your application
  • generating responses during an online assessment or interview
  • writing your CV or application on your behalf
  • exaggerating or falsifying any information you're providing like skills, experience or qualifications
  • recording or transcribing interviews or conversations with Kier employees without prior permission. For security purposes, you can request conversations to be recorded through our systems if needed

AI for reasonable adjustments

Throughout your application process, there will be opportunities to let us know if you need any reasonable adjustments to support you. If you plan to use AI tools (e.g. taking notes for you during the interview) please make sure you mention in your application or speak to your recruiter before the interview. This helps us make sure you have everything you need to support you.
