Senior Ecologist

We're looking for a Senior Ecologist to join our team based in Cambridge. In this role you'll provide specialist ecological support for non-intrusive and intrusive surveys, helping to shape the design and environmental impact assessment for a DCO application.

Location: Cambridge - travel to the office required with some working available, with occasional

Hours: Permanent Fulltime 42 hours per week – condensed hours considered with some flexibility on hours available if desired, just let us know when you speak to us.

Salary: £45,000 - £55,000 per year + private healthcare + £5.9k annual car allowance + benefits

What will you be responsible for?

As a Senior Ecologist, you'll be site-based, acting as the Lead Ecological Clerk of Works, responsible for a team of ecologists, overseeing the delivery of ecological mitigation whilst supervising contractors to ensure compliance with relevant legislation, planning conditions, and environmental management plans.

Your day-to-day will include:

  • Acting as the single point of contact for ecological matters on site, coordinating and supporting the ecology team
  • Identifying and recording ecological constraints, providing practical solutions to enable intrusive works whilst maintaining compliance with environmental legislation
  • Supervising contractors to ensure adherence to management plans, SSSI assents, and protected species licences
  • Conducting pre-construction checks, regular site inspections, and quality assurance of ecological documentation
  • Delivering inductions and toolbox talks, promoting environmental best practice throughout the project

What are we looking for?

This role of Senior Ecologist is ideal for someone who:

  • Holds a degree in ecology or a related discipline and is a member of CIEEM (or equivalent)
  • Brings proven experience at Senior Ecologist level, including working with contractors and managing compliance with protected species licence requirements
  • Has hands‑on experience delivering protected species surveys (such as badgers, nesting birds and reptiles) and overseeing works in high‑value environments, including SSSIs
  • Communicates confidently, with the ability to explain technical ecological information clearly to a wide range of audiences
  • Is comfortable working independently, making informed decisions on site, and identifying practical, proportionate solutions to ecological challenges
