Senior Pavement Engineer

We're looking for a Senior Pavement Engineer to join our Birmingham Highways Interim Services Contract team based at Thimble Mill Lane, Birmingham. This is a fantastic opportunity to become a key member of our Asset Management Team, leading the development and delivery of highway maintenance, resurfacing, and improvement schemes that enhance the local road network.

In this role, you'll take projects from initial concept and feasibility through to detailed design and implementation, applying your technical expertise to deliver practical, sustainable, and cost-effective pavement engineering solutions. Working closely with a range of stakeholders, you'll play an important role in shaping the future performance and resilience of Birmingham's highways infrastructure.

A full driving licence is essential, as you'll be required to visit project sites and attend stakeholder meetings across the network as needed.

Location: Thimble Mill Lane, Birmingham – hybrid working
Hours: Permanent Fulltime 40 hours per week - some flexibility on hours available if desired, just let us know when you speak to us
Salary: up to £47,000 per year + private healthcare + £5,900 annual car allowance + benefits

What will you be responsible for?

As a Senior Pavement Engineer, you'll lead the development and delivery of pavement maintenance and renewal programmes that maximise asset performance, extend asset life, and deliver long-term value across Birmingham's highway network. Working closely with technical teams, clients, and key stakeholders, you'll provide expert engineering advice, support the delivery of highway improvement schemes, and help shape future asset management strategies. You'll also play an important role in mentoring junior engineers and promoting innovation and best practice across the team. Your day to day will include:

• Leading the development and continuous improvement of forward programmes in line with contract requirements
• Providing technical support to design engineers and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders
• Carrying out inspections, lifecycle analysis, and whole-life assessments to inform asset strategy
• Identifying and implementing innovations to improve asset management practices
• Mentoring junior team members and promoting a strong health and safety culture

What are we looking for?

This role of Senior Pavement Engineer is great for someone who:

• Holds a degree in Civil Engineering, Highways Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or a related discipline
• Has extensive post-graduate experience delivering highways and pavement engineering design projects
• Is Chartered (CEng) or Incorporated (IEng) or actively working towards professional accreditation with a recognised institution such as ICE, CIHT, or IHE
• Demonstrates strong technical knowledge of pavement design standards, including the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) and Manual of Contract Documents for Highway Works (MCHW)
• Has a solid understanding of pavement maintenance, asset management, and lifecycle planning principles
• Possesses excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to develop practical, innovative engineering solutions
